The program covered the Keep Washington Working and Courts Open to All Acts. These laws prohibit jails, courts, prosecutors, and local law enforcement agencies from collecting and sharing place of birth and other non-public information with immigration officials. We talked about common violations defenders might encounter, how to report them, and how violations may help in an individual client’s case. We also talked about how to support your clients and their communities as they face the threat of increased immigration enforcement.
The program also covered the effective use of WDA’s Immigration Project services. We talked about immigration status: what it is, why it matters, how to figure it out; why we need to know the information on the intake form; and what the consequences are of some of the more common charges. And we of course talked about what is already happening/what we expect might happen in the wake of Trump’s second term.
