This CLE will review important considerations for serving non-citizen clients from the perspective of Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. The webinar will provide indispensable guidance on key topics such as understanding the implications of the Padilla v. Kentucky decision, and effectively assessing removability for criminal convictions and evaluating crime related bars to good moral character (GMC) in immigration proceedings. Attendees will gain practical strategies for obtaining accurate information and records crucial for building robust defense strategies, as well as insights into mitigating adverse immigration consequences during plea negotiations and sentencing.

Lavette Holman started her career as a Tribal Attorney for the Yakama Nation. As a result of defending Treaty hunting and fishing cases in various state courts, she moved into public defense and was a public defender for approximately 10 years with Yakima County and the Yakama Nation. She now works at NW Immigrant Rights Project, where she has been for about 2.5 years. Lavette's primary role at NWIRP is assisting unaccompanied minors obtain legal status.
